Klaipeda region:

Klaipeda is the third largest city in Lithuania with a population of around 183,000. It is the undisputed economic and cultural center of Western Lithuania. The port of Klaipeda is the northernmost ice-free harbour on the east coast of the Baltic Sea and the most important transport connection between East and West.

The region around Klaipeda is of an outstanding natural beauty. A narrow, dune-covered sand spit of about 100 km extend between the Baltic Sea and the Courland Lagoon.  It is called the Courland Spit, which runs through both Lithuania and Russia. The sand dunes reach an impressive height of up to 60 meters. In the year of 2000, the Courland Spit becomes part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Villages along the Courland Spit in Lithuania: Nida (German: Nidden), Preila (German: Preil), Pervalka (German: Perwelk) , Juodkrantė (German: Schwarzort) Alksnyne (German: Erlenhain) and Smiltynė (German: Sandkrug).

Klaipeda Tourism and Culture Information Centre

Klaipėda Tourism and Culture Information Centre (KTCIC) works actively with water tourism marketing since 2006 and organized many related events /regattas (e.g. Baltic Sail, Baltic Sprint Cup). It is currently the only public body in Klaipeda region directly involved in the development of water tourism and thus having a regional scope in its work. With MARRIAGE, KTCIC addresses the apparent lack of knowledge in effective operation of marinas, common marketing actions for all marinas in the region and cooperation between municipalities and private marinas operators. Core activities are a training programme for marinas operators in Klaipeda region (adjusted to specific regional needs /interests) and common promotion of marinas of Klaipeda region as part of the Southern Baltic rim. KTCIC represents Lithuania in the expert group on marina management in Component 4 and invites marina operators from Lithuania to int. exchange events (incl. travel costs subsidy). It is task leader of the sailing rally Lithuania-Russia-Poland.

SE Klaipeda State Seaport Authority (KSSA) is currently building two marinas (in southern Klaipėda Port and in Šventoji at the outer shore). In the first stage of Šventoji port, 72 berthing places for leisure boats are installed by June 2011. Further extensions are planned until 2015. The new marina in Klaipeda is to be opened in 2013. KSSA is authorized to manage and perform all the required functions for the new marinas. Within MARRIAGE, KSSA’s main interest is to learn on profitable marina management and operation (incl. a marina testing visits) and PPP / operating models. It takes parts in international exchange activities and elaborates a PPP operating concept for its new marinas based on the lessons learnt, which will a pilot and reference for PPP guidelines for marinas in Lithuania. KSSA starts also with marketing its new marinas, within the framework of the planned activities in Klaipeda region and the southern Baltic rim as a whole.
